[Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Failure of the driver through illness or other cause to actuate periodically a lever or the like, results consecutively in the operation of a signal, the disengagement of the driving means and the application of the brakes. A chamber 1 provided with an adjustable leak 2 is connected to a reservoir 16 by a cock 17 with the hand lever 19 in the position shown. If the pressure falls sufficiently a piston 6 is depressed by a spring 7 so as to cause a switch arm 9 to engage successively contacts 12, 13, 14 thus operating a whistle or other signal, disengaging the driving mechanism and applying the brakes. To prevent this the driver must move the lever temporarily to a position such that the reservoir 16 is connected by a pipe 18 to a compressed air supply, the reservoir 1 being however then isolated. To prevent the device from being effective during stoppages of the vehicle a centrifugal governor 22 driven from the wheels is arranged to break the circuit of the device at 21 when the vehicle is not running.
