Abstract

463,495. Feeding sheets. NAYLOR, W. H., and DAY & SONS, Ltd., J. Jan. 6,1936, No. 437. [Class 100 (i)] In a sheet-feeding apparatus of the kind in which the sheets are fed by reciprocating suction devices from a pile 16 which is automatically advanced by a support 15, the support 15 is formed with slots 15<a>, which are adapted to receive projections on plates 20, 21 carried by supports 22, 23, to form a support for the remainder of the pile when the support 15 is lowered to receive a fresh supply of sheets. The supports 22, 23 are carried by pivoted guides 24, 25 which are operable by a lever 30 and links 28, 29 to move the supports to and from the pile. The lever 30 may be handoperated, or operated automatically by the movement of the support 15. The support 15 is raised automatically by friction wheels, balance weights, or as shown a feeler-controlled ratchet mechanism is provided for automatically raising the support 15 in the normal operation of the machine and for raising the supports 22, 23 when the support 15 is being lowered. A reciprocating rod 40 actuates two levers 36, 38 fitted with pawls 41, 50 which respectively operate a shaft 18 having a gear engaging a rack 17 attached to the support 15, and a shaft 44 geared to a shaft 43. The shafts 43, 44 are fitted with pinions 26, 27 gearing with racks on the supports 22, 23. The rack 17 may be fitted with tappets or pawls for actuating the lever 30 automatically. The plates 20, 21 may be spring- mounted and the supports 22, 23 may be constructed without means for raising them when they support the pile. The apparatus may be adapted for tables 15 moving horizontally or at an angle.
