[Class 43] [Also in Group XXV] A clip for securing jewellery &c. to the hair, furs, &c. has jaws disposed to exert a brushing action parallel to the skin during the closing movement and grip the hair &c. near the roots. Figs. 4-6 show a setting b for jewel a, the setting having a pair of U-shaped jaw members d, e with one limb d<2>, e<2> of each pivoted in bearings f as shown. The other limbs d<1>, e<1> co-operate with a fixed abutment c under the action of torsion springs h. The jaws are opened by pressing together the outer arms k<1>, l<1> of a pair of levers pivoted at m. In a modification abutment c is omitted and the U-shaped jaws are coaxially pivoted to cooperate with one another. One jaw may be of trough form with a closed end to provide a recess in which the other jaw nests. In a further modification a single U-shaped jaw is used, co-operating with a fixed abutment on the setting. Figs. 19, 21 show a clip in lady-bird form comprising members 1, 2 pivoted together on an axis 3 perpendicular to the skin, members 1, 2 carry depending jaws 5, 6 of zigzag form and nesting together. The clip is held in open and closed positions by a blade-spring 8 acting on flats near the pivot 3 and is manipulated by projections 4. Other forms of clips are described comprising a scissor-like arrangement of pivoted arms carrying at their outer ends cups of hemispherical or conical form nesting together.
