Abstract
462,081. Making cable clamps. NECK, C. G. March 12, 1936, No. 7541. Convention date, May 10, 1935. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Altering structure by mechanical treatment.- A straining clamp for an overhead cable 12 comprises a shoe 1 of U-section having an arched central channel 5, Fig. 2, in which the cable is clamped by a clamping member 3 secured to the shoe by U-bolts 4. The clamp is supported by links 2, Fig. 5, which pass through slots 8 in the shoe disposed between the channel 5 and the side walls of the shoe, as shown in Fig. 3, the links being pivotally connected to the shoe by a bolt which passes through holes 11, Fig. 1, in the side walls of the shoe. The end portion of the shoe in which the slots 8 are provided is bent through a right angle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and is of reduced width so that the side walls of the shoe serve as side supports for the link 2. The shoe is pressed from a heated metal blank, the central channel 5 being first forged out and the edges of the plate then being bent up to form the side walls of the shoe. When cool, the end of the shoe is bent through a rightangle, pressure being simultaneously applied on the portions of the side walls of the shoe at which bending takes place so as to reduce the width of this portion of the shoe and increase the depth of its side walls. The material is bent cold to increase the strength of the bend. The slots 8 are then forged out, their lower edges 9 being subsequently subjected to axial compression to increase the thickness and hardness of the metal at these points against which the links 2 bear.
