Abstract

461,262. Uniting metal to ceramic material. PORZELLANFABRIK KAHLA, and HANDREK, H. Aug. 13, 1935, Nos. 22830, 22831, and 22832. Convention dates, Aug. 13, 1934, Aug. 17, 1934, and Jan. 26, 1935. [Class 36] A joint between a ceramic member and a metallic member is produced by making the metallic member thin-walled at the joint and heating by a blow-pipe or an electric heating element, a glass, flux, glaze or solder having a lower softening point than the ceramic member forming the fused joint. In one form, Fig. 1, a metal tube 11 is thin-walled at 13 and is shrunk onto a ceramic tube 12. A glass, glass flux or glaze 14 forming the joint is then applied. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the flux is preferably from 10 per cent to 40 per cent smaller than that of the ceramic member. The metal may be copper, nickel, chromium-nickel or molybdenum. The end of the portion 13 may be flared and a metal band may be shrunk onto the middle of the portion to increase the mechanical strength. The ceramic member may be conically ground into the metal member. A lead-in arrangement for an electrical vacuum vessel may comprise a ceramic member 20, Fig. 5, and a metal member 21 jointed as above described at 22. The metal member 21 is made thin-walled at 24 and is secured by a flux 26 to the wall 25 of the vacuum vessel. A further annular ceramicmetal unit may be sealed through the wall around the first and spaced from it. In a modification, the ceramic tube has a noble metal coating burnt onto it to which the metal tube is soldered. The metal tube may have a conical end to provide a trough for the solder, or may have apertures through which the solder passes and has a thin wall which may be tapered. The metal member is preferably coated at the joint with glass. The metal members or auxiliary metal members adjacent the joint may be heated by eddycurrents in making the joint. These auxiliary members may surround one or both of the tubes.
