461,157. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and YOUNGMAN, R. T. Dec. 13, 1935, No. 34641. [Class 4] An aircraft wing flap a which is adapted to be lowered bodily from its normal retracted position and turned to a desired extent about an axis b at or near the centre of pressure, the bodily lowering and turning movements of the flap being effected independently, is carried by a lever c which is pivoted at its front end on the aircraft wing at d, and is adapted to be lowered bodily by mechanism comprising a lever f pivoted to the wing at g and arranged parallel to lever a in the retracted position of the parts, and a link h connecting the free ends of levers c and f. Lever f and link h together constitute a knuckle jointed strut the elements of which are straightened out when the flap is moved to its lowered position to form one side of a triangulated structure of which the other sides are constituted by lever c and the wing framework between pivots d, g. Lever f constitutes one arm of a bell-crank lever f, j, the arm j of which is connected bv link k to lever n mounted on torque tube m. The means for maintaining flap a parallel to itself during lowering comprise a lever o rigid with the flap, a link q and a lever p which combine with lever c to form a parallelogram structure which is deformable for tilting the flap by means of a link r connected to a lever t mounted on torque tube s. The mechanism described may be duplicated at opposite ends of a flap or two levers c may be interconnected by a torque tube and, only one set of links and levers for regulating the movement of the flap be provided.
