460,708. Current transformers; calibrating meters. ALLGEMEINE ELEKTRICITATS-GES. July 1, 1935, No. 18786. Convention date, June 30, 1934. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A portable transformer for measuring A.C. or D.C. in straight conductors comprises a pair of annular cores 2, 3 divided so that they may be placed round a conductor 11 carrying the current to be measured, the cores carrying a pair of oppositely connected auxiliary excitation windings 4, 5 and a pair of series-connected secondary windings 7, 8. When D.C. is to be measured, the auxiliary windings 4, 5 are fed with A.C. from an auxiliary source (such as a commutator switching arrangement mounted on the transformer) so as to produce alternating fluxes acting oppositely on the secondaries. The additional effect of the D.C. in the conductor 11 is to produce a resultant alternating flux which produces a voltage at the secondary terminals proportional to the D.C. flowing. When A.C. is to be measured the auxiliary windings 4, 5 are disconnected. The core parts may be hinged together and provided with handles to form tongs. A measuring instrument may be mounted on the transformer. The instrument may be calibrated by comparison with current readings obtained by passing current through an ampere-hour meter for a measured period of time and dividing the meter readings by the time. To facilitate calculation, the number of units of time during which current is allowed to flow is made equal to the transformer ratio, or to a simple fraction or multiple of it.
