Abstract

[Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] The method for the production of a mixture of coal gas and water gas in intermittent vertical chambers described in the parent Specification in which a chamber wherein carbonization is complete is steamed to generate water gas which is passed through the upper parts of the remaining chambers wherein carbonization is in progressively advanced stages to mix with the coal gas generated therein, is modified by associating with the group of chambers, a chamber serving only for the production of water gas. A partly carbonized chamber may also be steamed. Chamber A of a group is charged with coke and steamed to generate water gas which passes to a main 7 connected by valved conduits with retorts D, C, B, charged with coal and in increasingly advanced stages of carbonization. One or more of the valves may be open. The mixed gases pass to the foul main 4, through valved off-takes 3, valves b<1> ... d<1> being open and valve a<1> closed. The water gas chamber is provided with a movable grate comprising a pair of shafts 18, Fig. 3, with oval members 17 attached thereto, the members on one shaft intermeshing with those on the other. Gearing 21 interconnecting the ends of the shafts enables the members 17 to be oscillated in opposite directions for the purpose of discharging accumulated ash. More than one water gas chamber may be provided to each group.
