Abstract

Silica gel is obtained by precipitating water glass with an acid ammonium sulphate solution in such a quantity that after the separation of the gel, the remaining liquid has a pH between 2 and 5, preferably 2,5 and 4. According to an example one litre of normal hydrochloric acid and one litre of normal ammonium sulphate solution are added separately but simultaneously to one litre of a water glass solution with brisk stirring, the pH of the resulting mixture being 3. The reaction is conducted at or slightly below room temperature. After standing for 24 hours the silica gel is separated, freed from impurities in known manner and dried.
