Abstract

458,925. Vehicle seats. BLYTH, J. P., Hill, near Rugby. May 29, 1935, No. 15601. [Class 52 (ii)] In seats of the type in which a pivotally mounted back-rest B is also pivotally con. nected to a fore-and aft movable seat proper S, the positions of the respective pivots A, B are chosen to offer mini mum restraint to motion of the parts while these are affording the desired support to the occupant. As applied to a motor-vehicle driving seat, rollers R carried by the seat S move in slots in frame-members J, the slots being so inclined as always to support the driver's thighs while his feet are on the pedals D, the pivots H are approximately aligned with his hip-joints, and the pivots A with his elbows when his hands are holding the steering- wheel C. A graphical method for determining the limits of the slots j in relation to the pivots H, based on average anatomical dimensions of a driver and the position P of his heels, is described. The seat S is forwardly biassed by shock-absorbing compression springs T, Fig. 4, which are fully extended when the seat is in its foremost position. The frames J and brackets E for the pivots A are carried on an adjustable base F. Adjustable friction washers may be provided at the pivots A to control the freedom of movement of the parts.
