Abstract
458,298. Retorts for destructive distillation; retort furnaces. KRUPP AKT.-GES., F., Essen, Germany. Jan. 27, 1936, Nos. 2489 and 2490. Convention dates, Jan. 28, 1935 and Feb. 8, 1935. [Classes 51 (i), 51 (ii), and 55 (i)] Apparatus for heating bulk material such as coal comprises spaced heating chambers 2 resting on supports 5, and enclosing the material to be heated, discharge of the residue being facilitated by relative movement of the heating chambers so as temporarily to enlarge the spaces between them. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the material 3 is retained between the heating chambers 2 by flanges 4, and separation of the chambers is effected by hand wheels 16 and screwed spindles 15 carrying collars 15a which engage lugs 16a formed on the chambers. The distillates escape through an outlet 18. Hot gases are circulated through the heating chambers 2 from an inlet 14 through a main 8, and ducts 6 each with a sand seal 10, baffles 11 prolonging the flow to outlet ducts 7 and main 9 from which the hot gases are withdrawn by fan 12 for re-circulation, excess gas escaping through outlet 13. In Fig. 7, the heating chambers 42 are wedge shaped, and for enlarging the spaces 43 occuplied by the charge, they are moved in the direction of their wider ends by push rods 52, connections with the mains 45, 46 being made by resilient pipes 49. The wedge-shaped heating chambers may be arranged in circular formation, and may be moved radially outwards, radial movement of the chambers being controlled by movements of the top and bottom covers.
