Abstract
Finely granulated, colloidal, or plastic material is dried, calcined or otherwise physically or chemically treated by being vibrated in a trough, the vibrations being transverse to the trough and of the order of 2,000 to 5,000 per minute, and having an amplitude of 0,2 to 5 mm. In the form shown in Fig. III the trough, supported on springs and vibrated by a motor 4, is provided with a gas-tight cover 9, and with a jacket 6. The material is fed by a pocket wheel 12 and discharged over a sluice <PICT:0458071/III/1> <PICT:0458071/III/2> <PICT:0458071/III/3> 13, 14. Gas for treating the material is fed and discharged by pipes 10, 11, and heating fluid circulated through the jacket by pipes 7, 8. The pipes 7, 8, 10, 11 have flexible connections. A hollow core 15, Fig. V, may be furnished and may be rigidly attached to the trough, or lie loosely therein; heating fluid may be passed through the core. Fig. VI shows a form comprising a number of parallel troughs 17, vibrated transversely by a motor 19 and supported on springs 18, the material overflowing from one trough to the next; the troughs may be of saw-toothed cross-section.
