Abstract

457,517. Yielding - drive for taps; slipping clutches. ARCHDALE & CO., Ltd., J., JEWSBURY, J., and PIERCE, B. L., Ledsam Street, Birmingham. Aug. 21, 1935, No. 23453. [Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXIV] In a yielding-drive device for a tapping- machine, the machine spindle a is formed hollow so as to receive the shank b of the tap chuck c, longitudinal grooves being formed in the shank to engage rows of balls e located in radial recesses in the spindle a. A split sleeve f normally maintains the balls in engagement with the grooves to drive the tap but allows the balls to yield and stop the drive when the tap encounters excessive resistance. The sleeve is fixed axially by collars g on the spindle and is prevented from rotating by pegs h engaging the split h<1> therein. A spring i in the spindle engages a thrust washer on the shank b so that feed of the spindle may continue without damage after rotation of the tap has stopped. Axial movement of the shank within the spindle is limited by the balls engaging the ends of the grooves, or a shoulder on the shank. In a modification the radial recesses in the spindle are replaced by axial slots which receive cylindrical rollers engaging the grooves of the shank, a ball being placed at each end of each roller.
