Abstract

Porous metals, e.g. aluminium and aluminium alloys, are proofed against liquid, particularly glycol, by first subjecting to an anodic oxidation process and thereafter coating with a synthetic resin varnish of the thermo-hardening type and hardening by heating at gradually increasing temperatures. The varnish may be applied under vacuum or by painting or spraying, but is applied preferably under pressure, suitably a pressure of 40 lbs. per square inch for 5 minutes. Suitable heat treatment for a phenol-formaldehyde varnish comprises baking in successive two-hour stages at temperatures of 50, 70, 90, 110, and 150 DEG C. For use with glycol, the synthetic resin should not contain plasticizers.
