Abstract

Unsaturated organic compounds or mixtures thereof are polymerized while maintaining them in a state of suspension in an aqueous medium by continuous agitation in the presence of powdery or finely-divided solid inorganic substances to yield powdery polymers. Suitable inorganic substances which may be prepared in situ by precipitation include kaolin, talcum, barium sulphate, kiesulguhr, aluminium oxide, aluminium hydroxide, iron hydroxide or other water - insoluble metallic hydroxides or oxy salts such as hydrolysis products of iron chloride, aluminium chloride, stannous chloride and antimony pentachloride. Cellulose esters or ethers, solvents or softening agents may be added to the monomeric organic substances. The polymers may if desired, be separated from the inorganic powdery substances by sifting, centrifuging or solvent action. The products, with or without the powdery inorganic substances, and with or without other fillers if desired may be worked up into solid products or into lacquers. In examples (a) a mixture of acrylic acid ethyl ester and benzoyl peroxide is polymerized by heating in a water-talcum mixture to yield a product of any desired degree of polymerization which may be worked up into a leather-like product with the addition of other fillers such as soot or talcum; (2) acrylic acid butyl ester containing benzoyl peroxide is polymerized, in a mixture of barium sulphate and water; (3), (4) and (7) vinyl acetate, methacrylic acid butyl ester or acrylic acid ethyl ester containing benzoyl peroxide is polymerized in a mixture of talcum and water; (5) a mixture of vinyl acetate, acrylic acid methyl ester and benzoyl peroxide is polymerized in a mixture of kaolin and water; (6) a mixture of ethyl cellulose, acrylic acid ethyl ester and benzoyl peroxide is polymerized in a mixture of aluminium and water. Specification 427,494 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers in general to the use of powdery substances and includes in examples the use of polymethyl methacrylite and ethyl cellulose. The Specification also refers to the use of emulsifying agents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
