Abstract

Metal articles to be drawn, rolled, or otherwise worked are provided with a crystalline coating of a metallic oxide or salt in heterogeneous crystalline union with the metal and firmly united therewith. Iron or steel may be coated, by processes such as that known as Parkerizing, with phosphates or oxalates, the article being treated with a heated dilute solution of phosphoric or oxalic acid, which may contain phosphates or oxalates of iron, manganese, zinc, &c. in solution. Iron or steel may alternatively be coated with black oxide by dipping them into a solution of 70 grams of crystalline ferrous chloride, 10 grams of ferric chloride, and 2 grams of mercuric chloride in 1 litre of water, to which are added several drops of hydrochloric acid. After dipping, the metal is heated at 100 DEG C. for half an hour, treated with steam, and boiled in water. Brass is coated by a colouring method by dipping in a solution of 16 ozs. of dry copper carbonate in 1 quart of aqueous ammonia (26 deg. B<\>ae.) mixed with a solution of 3 ozs. of soda ash in 2 gallons of water prepared at 160 DEG F. After dipping for a few minutes, the brass is washed in cold and later in boiling water.
