Abstract

454,931. Altimeters. WRIGHT, G. M., Broom Hall, Woodham Ferris, Essex. April 6, 1935, No. 10687. [Class 106 (ii)] A boss 3 on the evacuated capsule 1 is provided with a contact 4 working between contacts 5, 6 on the frame 2 the contacts 4, 6 being connected in circuit with a battery 13 and the primary of a transformer 12. The secondary of the transformer is in circuit with a neon lamp 14 adapted to illuminate a scale 11 over which moves a pointer 10. Attached to the spindle 8 of the pointer is a flat spring 7 the other end of which is pivoted to the boss 3. The spindle 8 is rocked constantly so that the pointer oscillates between the highest reading on the scale and zero the contact 4 just touching the contact 5 and 6 in these positions. During every oscillation, the force exerted by the spring 7 will just balance the force exerted by the atmospheric pressure at some point during its movement and immediately after this balance, the contact 4 will flip suddenly from the contact which it is engaging to the other contact there to remain until balance is achieved in the next oscillation when it will flip back. This flip causes a sudden momentary current to pass through the primary of the transformer and therefore a momentary current will be induced in the secondary causing the Neon lamp to strike and illuminate the needle.
