Abstract
454,851. Sawing wedges. MANLEY, S., Honiton, Castlecroft Road, Wolverhampton. April 4, 1935, No. 10424. [Class 145 (ii)] A device for use in cutting wedges and like members from wood and the like comprises a base member 1, Fig. 1, fixed to a band-saw machine, as by means of a depending flange engaging a transverse groove 5 in the machine frame 6; a slide member 3 has rollers running on guides 2, the slide being moved towards and away from the saw 18 by means of a handle 20. The end of the wood W is placed against a positioning member 4 pivotally mounted at 14 on a slide 9 adjusted in the transverse slideway 8 by a screw 10 or by a pivoted lever, cam or like device. After each movement of the slide 3 towards the cutter the inclination of the fence 4 is reversed ; for this purpose the fence 4 has an eye member 19 engaged by the thumb of the hand grasping the handle 20. Pivotal movement of the fence 4 is limited by screws 21 mounted in arms 22 of a member 23 carried by the transverse slide 9. The wood is positioned by a shoulder 4<d> on a wood block 4<c> secured to a wood block 4<b> adjustably secured to the fence plate 4<a> by screws 16 in elongated slots 15. During its movement the wood is supported by a ledge 17 on the base 1, this ledge being cut away behind the saw 18. In a modification, Fig. 4, the slide 3<a> has cylindrical rollers running on a guide 2<b> and grooved rollers running on a ridge 24; stops 27, 26<a> limit the movement of the slide. The bed 2<a> is fixed to the machine frame by a screw clamp 36. Markings 35 may be provided to facilitate the setting of the block 4<c> relative to the plate 4<a>. The work is supported by the block 32 which is slotted to accommodate the saw and is cut awav behind the saw with an inclined face to deflect the cut portions away from the machine. A circular saw may be used instead of a band saw. The work may comprise a number of superimposed strips, so that a number of wedge members are cut at each stroke.
