Abstract

454,683. Laminated springs. WOODHEAD & SONS, Ltd., J., Kirkstall Road, and SANDERS, T. H., 77, Cowper Street, both in Leeds. July 13, 1935, No. 20056. [Class 108 (ii)] An axle attachment for a laminated spring includes one or more adjustable wedge devices arranged transversely of the spring either between the spring and its hoop or equivalent or between groups of the spring plates, so that any slackness in the attachment may be taken up by adjustment of the wedge or wedges. As shown in Fig. 1, the spring 5 is embraced by a hoop 2 having legs 3 passing through and secured to the axle 4 and a transversely-arranged wedge 6 is inserted between the upper end of the hoop and the inclined face of a block 7 and has a stud 8 protruding through a hole in one side of the hoop to receive a nut 9 by which the wedge can be moved to take up any slack between the hoop and the spring or axle. In a modification, the hoop is replaced by an upper clamping- plate and side bolts, the wedge being disposed between the inclined under-surface of the plate and the top leaf of the spring, while the stud 8 passes through a side bearing-block. In a further construction, the hoop is a plain band and seats in lugs on top of the axle-box and a pair of wedges are used to take up slack. The invention is also shown applied to a spring of the " multiplex " type such as described in Specification 407,497, the wedge being inserted between the two spring portions.
