G., c/o Callender's Cable & Construction Co., Ltd., Hamilton House, Victoria Embankment, London. April 16, 1935, Nos. 11700 and 34545. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] A single core cable comprises a laminated body of insulation 4 impregnated with a liquid or semiliquid material, the layers of insulation having a non-circular form when seen in section at right angles to the axis of the conductor, the body of insulation being built up on a smooth, complete, elastic metal surface 2 of non-circular crosssection formed by lapping metal tape over a smoothing layer 3 of small thickness surrounding the conductor 1 and consisting of paper or other soft fibrous material. A helix 9, of non- circular cross-section, of resilient metal tape may be placed inside the layer 3; such helix may be lapped directly on the conductor or on a layer of soft fibrous material. The insulation 4 is enclosed in a conductive layer 5 contacting with the lead sheath 6 which has a protective covering 7 of impregnated fibrous material. The spaces between the core and sheath may be filled with gas or partly with gas and partly with impregnating compound. A method of jointing is shown in Fig. 5, in which the ends of the conductors 1, the outer layers of which may have been cut back, are jointed by means of a ferrule 12 and soldering, the tapes 3, previously bent back, being then wrapped over the soldered joint and secured by soldering metal 13.
