453,662. Indicating-apparatus. BURDICK, C. L., 4, Eastern Road, Wood Green, London. May 25, 1935, No. 15332. [Class 106 (iv)] [See also Group XX] The moisture-content of substances having interstices is determined from the humidity of air drawn through the interstices. A hygroscopic element 8, e.g. cone fibre, hair, goldbeaters skin, is supported in a tubular member 3 which has a pointed end 4 and apertures 13 and at the other end a passage leading to means for connecting it to a suction pump. The member 3, which may have a disc like shield 6, is inserted into the substance to be tested and air drawn by the suction pump through the interstices of the substance, the apertures 13, and preferably a filter 14 and past the hygroscopic element 8. The latter is adjustably secured at one end to the tube 3 by a screw 11 and at the other end is secured to a fine wire 9 which passes through a gland 16 in a partition 17 at the upper end of the tube 3 to a lever 30 in the circular casing 1. The lever 30 is pivoted to a frame 29 which may be adjusted on its support 28 by a screw 32. The support 28 may be adjusted relatively to a bracket 27 fixed to the back of the dial 25 by the screw 27a. The lever 30 is connected by a link 38 to a lateral arm 37 on a lever 34 pivoted at one end to a bracket 33 on the frame 29 and having at the other end a pin 35 which engages a slot 36 in a pointer 26. The screw 11 enables the zero position of the pointer to be adjusted, the screw 27a the amplitude of movement, and the screw 32 adjusts the relative amplitude of movement at either end of the scale.
