Abstract

453,177. Flexible shafts. WARD, E. A., 124, Brearley Street, Birmingham. May 4, 1935, No. 13326. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXVIII] The passage through a conduit of a flexible rod or shaft 1 is facilitated by providing the latter with runner devices or carriers, each of which comprises a central boss 2 having a plurality of circumferentially-spaced radial arms &c. 3. The arms 3, which are of bowed or clawed formation and may be covered with rubber, are adapted to contact with, and so maintain the shaft clear of, the wall of the conduit. The boss 2 is made in two hinged parts 2<a>, Fig. 7, to enable the runner to be clamped to the shaft at any point along its length ; alternatively, the runner is mounted on a screw 5, Fig. 5, between nuts 6, 7, the nut 7 and end of the screw 5 being engageable respectively with the screw-threaded parts 10, 11 of jointing ferrules 8, 9 on the adjacent ends of successive shaft sections.
