451,580. Nonconducting coverings for sound. JOHNS -MANVILLE CORPORATION, 22, East 40th Street, New York, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Parkinson, J. S.) Dec. 7, 1934, No. 35198. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1933. [Class 64 (ii)] [See also Group X] A structure for absorbing or deadening sounds of low frequency, such as those emitted by aeroplane engines, comprises a framework 4 having a taut woven fabric 1 mounted on its outer face and coated so as to be impermeable to air, a backing 2 of sounddeadening material being attached to the inside of the fabric. The frame 4 may be secured to a base material 5 so as to form an air space 6, and may form part of the aeroplane structure. The facing material 1 may be aeroplane linen coated with dope so as to become taut. The material 2 may be hair or wool felt, and may cover the whole of the fabric 1 or only spaced areas thereof. It may be attached to the fabric 1 by sodium silicate, or a resinous material such as pontianak.
