Abstract

450,505. Type-bar-making machines. TELETYPE CORPORATION, 1400, Wrightwood Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Dec. 11, 1935, No. 34332. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1934. [Class 100 (iii)] Quadding-apparatus ; driving-mechanism.- Quadding and centring apparatus, particularly for machines operated automatically from a record-strip, is set or adjusted by a device comprising sets of storage relays, from one to another of which a quadding-signal is transferred under the control of the assemblerelevator, so that each signal accompanies its associated line through the machine. Provision is thereby made for the quadding of several lines contained in the machine at the same time, for example, one in the assembler, one in the intermediate channel, and one in the casting-elevator. The quadding movement of the vice-jaws may be effected by a vertically movable rod 127, Fig. 6, having at its upper end a connector in the form of a grooved collar 128, which is rotatable into any one of three positions, in order to engage one or the other or both of two pins 131, 134 carried by levers which move the jaws. The connector is rotated by a rack 118, Fig. 4, engaged by a main operating-lever 111, which can be shifted into either of its extreme positions, for right- or left-hand quadding, by solenoids 96, 103, and into a mid position, for centring, by a pair of solenoids 114, 116. The quadding- signal is made either by one of three automatically selected levers 12, 13, 14, or by one of three key-levers 15, 16, 17, which close circuits from sources of current 18, 19 through contacts 21, 22, and the winding of one of three storage relays 25, 47, 57 to earth. The energized relay, for example, 25, attracts four armature contactors 27, 28, 29, 31. The contactor 27 completes a locking-circuit from a current source 32 through the armatures of the relays 47, 57 and through the contactor 27 and the winding of the relay 25 to earth. The armature of each relay is, in this way, incorporated in a circuit which includes a contactor located under the control of each of the other relays, so that only one relay can be in action at a time. When the assembler 66 rises, a contact 68 is closed, and current passes from the source 32 through a line 69, the contactor 28 of the relay 25, and the winding of one of three secondary relays 74 to earth. The relay 74 attracts armature contactors 86, 91, and a locking-circuit is thereby established from a source 81 through a line 85, the contactor 86, and the winding of the relay 74, to earth. Upon the further rise of the assembler, the holding-circuit of the relay 25 is broken, so that the primary relays are ready to receive a new signal. When the casting-elevator 159 rises, after the casting of the line contained in it, a contact 98 is made, which completes a circuit from a current source 94 through the contactor 91 of the secondary relay 74, and through the solenoid 96, by which the main operating-lever 111 is shifted. The solenoids 103, 114, 116 are operated in a similar way by the other primary and secondary relays. The locking-circuit of the operated relay 74 is broken at the contact 82 when the line-delivery slide 161, which contains a waiting line, commences its movement, so that the secondary relays 74 are made ready to receive a new signal from the primary relays. Specification 415,798 is referred to.
