Abstract

In a method of manufacturing anatomical or biological specimens, models, or the like, a liquid comprising one or more vinyl compounds capable of forming a solid or rubber-like material upon polymerization is injected into the organ or member, the form of which is to be reproduced, after which the compound or compounds is or are polymerized. The vinyl compound may be methacrylic acid methyl ester in its monomeric condition, methacrylic acid ethyl ester, acrylic acid methyl ester, vinyl acetate, &c., or if a more viscous medium is required partially polymerized methacrylic acid methyl ester or solutions in monomeric methacrylic acid methyl ester of substances such as p cellulose esters or ethers, polymeric vinyl compounds, or resins such as colophonium may be used. The liquid may include an oxygen-generating polymerization catalyst, a polymerization regulator, and any suitable colouring agent. The liquid is injected into the organ to be reproduced and hardened by polymerization, after which the surrounding tissues, bones, &c. are broken down by an acid such as hydrochloric acid and an alkali such as potassium hydroxide. The injection medium can be produced in any colour by the addition of colouring agents and polymerization may be produced by heating in a water bath for one or two days at 45 DEG C.
