[Class 118 (ii)] [See also Groups VI, XVIII, and XX] For signalling, advertising or display purposes a device for emitting a smoke or vapour screen and means for projecting a light signal thereon are constructed as a selfcontained unit. In the form shown the unit is carried on a vertical pivot and is caused by one or more vanes to take up an angular position according to the wind direction. The smoke generator 1, Fig. 1, communicates with a hollow, vertical, pivotally mounted tube 2. A frame 3, 4, 5 attached to the tube 2 carries at one end a lamp 8 throwing a vertical beam through the lens 9 and a horizontal beam through the lens 10 towards a member 11 of aerofoil section at the other end of the frame. The member 11 carries a vertical vane 14 for turning the pivoted structure into the direction of the wind and a number of prisms 15 which reflect some of the tight from the beam 10 into a vertical direction. Smoke passes from the generator 1 through three concentric tubes 17, 18, 19, Fig. 3, within the tube 2. The tube 17 leads to an ellipsoidal chamber 20 having a leeward orifice and arranged in a chamber 21 with a circular orifice 22 at the windward end and at the leeward end a slot 23 through which the smoke issues as a horizontal sheet. The slot 23 may have a fitment with a series of diverging pipes from which the smoke issues as a fan. The tube 18 leads to a similar emitter. The smoke passing through the tube 19 issues from the top of the tube 2 round the lamp 24 and forms a vertical column illuminated by lamps 24, 25, 27, 28 and serves as a beacon. Fans may be provided in the tubes 17, 18, 19. The main emitters 23 may emit smoke of different colours and may be automatically shut off when smoke is being emitted as a vertical column. A lamp 29 and optical system 30-34 enables a stencil or film at 35 to be projected on to the smoke screen so that messages may be sent to aircraft.
