Abstract
449,940. Presses for separating liquids from solids. CARVER, F. S., 345, Hudson Street, New York, U.S.A. June 28, 1935, No. 18520. [Class 46] A press for separating liquids such as oil and water from substances such as cocoa, copra and sewage which have been reduced to a sufficiently fluid state for pumping comprises at least three coaxial press chambers which can be shortened and to which the fluid can be supplied individually through pipes leading to the centres of the chambers. In the construction shown, a number of chambers are formed by movable platens 22 and rings 72 the fluid to be treated entering the chambers through radial passages 22a. To one side of each platen is secured a piston 34 and to the opposite side a filter plate 36<1>, the piston 34 also carrying a filter plate 36. The filter plates are recessed and provided with filtering elements 38 consisting of filter cloth, perforated metal sheet and coarse wire mesh. In the faces of the plates 36, 36<1> next to the filtering elements are circular slots 48 leading by passages passing through the plates to radial slots 52 through which the expressed liquid is conducted to slots 54 in the pistons 34 and slots 55 in the rings 72. In the centre of each piston 34 and its filtering element 38 is a hollow plug 64 the bore of which communicates through a central passage 22b in the piston with the radial passage 22a in the corresponding platen 22. The plug 64 is fitted with a check valve 69. The passages 22<a> are connected externally of the press to separate flexible tubes 71 which are all joined to a common pipe line 70 through which the fluid to be treated is pumped. The rings 72 are slidable over the pistons and filter plates and are pressed away from the platens on one side by springs 88. In this position the rings overlap both filter plates 36, 361 and close the chambers between them. The chambers are opened to allow the press cakes to fall out by retracting the rings over the pistons. After the chambers have been filled with fluid they are shortened by a hydraulic ram 104, the expressed liquids escaping through the slots 54, 55 and being received in a pan 120 having a spout loading to a tank. When the pressing is complete the pressure is released causing the springs 88 to separate the platens 22. The rings 72 are then retracted over the pistons thus opening the chambers and causing the cakes to drop out. The movement of the rings is produced through mechanism operated by a hydraulic ram 150 connected to a yoke 156 carrying rods 130 which engage the rings.
