Abstract
449,121. Screwing; tapping. B.S.A. TOOLS, Ltd., Armoury Road, Small Heath, and OGILVIE, W., c/o B.S.A. Tools, Ltd., Montgomery Street, Sparkbrook, both in Birmingham. Aug. 3, 1935, No. 22062. [Class 83 (iii)] In screw-thread cutting devices wherein the die or tap-holder is rotated in the same direction as the work but at a greater speed for cutting, and is stopped for unscrewing, a detachable toolhead 14, Fig. 2, is provided comprising a constantly rotating driving member 12 provided with a clutch face or dogs 20, Fig. 3, a revoluble and longitudinally movable driven member 22 having dogs to engage the driving member, and under the action of a spring 28, the driven member being further provided with a clutch face 29 engaging a similar face on the fixed body part 30 which retards its rotation when moved to the left out of engagement with the driving member and serves to withdraw the screwing tool 25. Towards the end of a screw-thread cutting operation the longitudinal motion of the turret carrying the device is arrested, but the forward pull of the work on the tool continues and disengages the driving and driven members, moving the latter against the brake surface 30. A ring-shaped cam-member 32 which is thereby released is urged around by a peripheral spring 38 to force the driven member against the brake surface. The cam member is automatically re-set on retracting the turret by a stop 43 which engages a lever 45 projecting from the screw-cutting device.
