Abstract

448,747. Ironing-presses. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Sept. 20, 1935, No. 26115. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1934. [Class 138 (ii)] The press is operated in three stages; firstly the carriage 19 supporting the head 25 is swung about a pivot 21 to cause the head and buck 15 to register, the head is then lowered into light engagement with the buck by manipulation of a lever 41 counterclockwise and finally the full pressure is applied by manipulation of another lever 56 counterclockwise. Operation of the lever 56 is non-effective until the lever 41 has been operated. The head is resiliently secured to the arm 26 of the carriage by spring-pressed bolts 27 and is moved away from the arm to close the press and apply the pressure. The lever 41 rotates a shaft 35 mounted in the arm 26 and to which are fixed arms 37 of which the forward ends engage in notches in a block 39 slidably mounted in the arm 26 and bearing at its lower end on a plate 57 secured to the upper surface of the head whereby the latter is forced away from the arm 26. The lever 56 rotates a cam shaft 42 mounted in the block 39 and carrying a roller cam 47 acting on the plate 57. Initial rotation of the cam shaft locks the block 39 to its stationary guide 40 on the arm 26 through a pawl mechanism 49 which can be operated only after the block has been moved downward in its stationary guide a predetermined distance by the operation of the first lever 41. The forward portion of the lower end of the carriage is notched and one limb of the notch is cut away whereby, on the initial swinging of the carriage about the pivot 21, a stationary pin 24 enters the cut away portion of the notch. On drawing the carriage forward, during which time a slot 22 in the carriage traverses the pivot pin 21, the pin 24 enters the rear end 23 of the notch and holds the carriage locked. Drainage of the buck is effected by a pipe 17 into a removable cylindrical trough 18.
