Abstract
Vat dyes, dyeing with; regenerated celluloses, dyeing.--Textile fibres of vegetable, animal or artificial origin are dyed with vat dyes, having but slight affinity therefor, by employing a pretreatment of the fibres with a quaternary ammonium compound containing no heterocyclic nucleus or a quaternary phosphonium or ternary sulphonium compound, which quaternary or ternary compound contains at least one aliphatic radicle with at least 8 carbon atoms. Compounds specified as suitable are trimethyldodecylammonium bromide, trimethyloctylammonium hydroxide, tri-(b -oxyethyl)-cetylammonium hydroxide, trimethyloctodecylammonium bromide, trimethyloctylphonium hydroxide, triethyloctodecyl phosphonium bromide, tripropyloleylphosphonium chloride, diethyloleylsulphonium hydroxide and dipropyloctodecylsulphonium acetate. Specified artificial fibres are viscose, copper and Chardonnet artificial silks. The following examples are specified: (1) Cotton skein goods are treated for 1 hour in an aqueous solution at 80 DEG C. of trimethyldodecylammonium bromide, hydroextracted, dried, vat dyed with Indigo B.A.S.F. powder L, rinsed and dried; the depth of colour can be strengthened by repeated treatment in the vat; (2) Cotton yarn is left overnight in an aqueous solution at 40--60 DEG C. of triethyloctodecylphosphonium bromide, hydroextracted, dried, vat dyed with Indigo powder K, rinsed and dried. Specifications 294,890, [Class 15 (ii)], 372,325, 390,218, and 419,010 are referred to. Trimethyloctyl ammonium hydroxide is obtained by treating with a strong base the product of reaction of trimethylamine with octyl bromide. Tri-(b -oxyethyl)-cetylammonium hydroxide is obtained by treating with a strong base the product of reaction of triethanolamine with cetyl bromide. Trimethyloctodecylammonium bromide is obtained by reaction of trimethylamine with octodecyl bromide. Trimethyloctylphosphonium hydroxide is obtained by treating with a strong base the product of reaction of trimethylphosphine with octyl bromide. Triethyloctodecylphosphonium bromide is obtained by reaction of triethylphosphine with octodecyl bromide. Tripropyloleylphosphonium chloride is obtained by reaction of tripropylphosphine with oleyl chloride. Diethyloleylsulphonium hydroxide is obtained by treating with a strong base the product of reaction of diethylsulphide with oleyl bromide. Dipropyloctodecylsulphonium acetate is obtained by reaction of dipropyl sulphide with octodecyl acetate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use as pretreatment agents of dodecylamine hydrochloride, octodecylamine acetate or tartrate and diethyldodecylamine hydrochloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
