Abstract

447,747. Lathes. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.- (National Acme Co. ; 131st Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 24, 1934, No. 27407. [Class 83 (iii)] In an automatic multi-spindle screw machine such as that described in Specification 410,135 the work turret indexing mechanism is arranged to index the work turret either by the distance between successive spindles or by twice such distance at each operation. Thus a six spindle machine may either be arranged to complete one piece for each revolution of the turret 39 or in cases where the work may be complete at three spindles, two pieces may be completed per cycle. The usual lower cross slides 206, 207, upper cross slide 209, threading slide 131 and central carrier 71 for end working tools are provided. The turret carries a gear 38 engaged by a gear ring 5 to effect the indexing. The gear 5 is operated through a disc 37 having four sets of lugs 49 which coact with a roll carried by the indexing arm 36 on the main cam shaft 30. Studs 3 mounted in the disc 37 and in a member 371 bolted to disc 37 by bolts 37<11>, carry double planetary gears 2, 6, the part 2 engaging external teeth on the ring 5 and the part 6 engaging external teeth on a central gear 7. For indexing the turret through one sixth of a revolution, the disc 37 is secured to the ring 5 by bolts 10<1> while the gear 7 is free to rotate on the frame 8. This renders the planetary gearing ineffective. When an indexing movement of one third of a revolution is required, the bolts 10<1> are removed and placed in the position 10 where they connect gear 7 to the frame and hold it stationary. With this setting of the parts the gear 5 rotates twice as fast as before relatively to the disc 37.
