Abstract
<PICT:0446739/III/1> <PICT:0446739/III/2> <PICT:0446739/III/3> An evaporator contains a rapidly rotated drum a supplied internally with heating steam and having internal longitudinal ribs b with inclined surfaces d between them in order that condensate from the steam within the drum may be driven by centrifugal force through apertures e into a collecting chamber f at the end of the drum. The heating unit may be immersed in a bulk of liquid and may also serve as the rotor of a pump. In a modification, a pump s, Fig. 7, forces liquid to leave chamber w through tubes t provided with apertures through which the liquid is sprayed on to the drum. Liquid trickles down the drum and collects in the bottom of the surrounding chamber from which it is removed by pump s. Liquid particles in the escaping vapour are flung against the chamber walls by blading v1 rotating with the drum, and trickle down to the collecting space at the bottom. Alternatively, the tubes t may not have spraying apertures and may feed the liquid into an annular trough on the top of the drum from which the liquid escapes and flows as a film down the drum.
