Abstract
446,561. Folding paper. GUTBERLET, A., (trading as A. GUTBERLET & CO.), M÷lkau. Leipsic, Germany. Aug. 14, 1935, No. 22891. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1934. [Class 100 (i)] In a machine for cross-folding sheets of paper having a blade folding-mechanism for folding the sheets after they have passed through a buckling folding-mechanism, the stroke of the blade 11 is effected by the sheet itself which is led up to the front stops 9 of the cross-folding mechanism to close a control suction opening and produce a suction action .in a conduit, whereby a movable member in the suction system connected to the blade 11 is actuated in the same direction as the blade 11. The sheet to be folded passes over a table 1 to a buckling folder, and thereafter is deposited on conveying bands 8 which carry it to the front stops 9 so as to lie above a pair of folding- rollers 10. The blade 11 is connected with the rod 12 of a piston 13 in a stationary cylinder 14, the blade 11 being held in the inoperative position by a spring 15. The cylinder 14 is connected by means of a conduit 16 with an air pump 17, a rotary slide valve 18 being arranged in the conduit whereby the latter can be shut off from or opened to the atmosphere. The valve 18 is connected to the spring-retained rod 26 of a piston inside a cylinder 24, this cylinder being connected by a conduit 27 to the pump 17. Arranged in the conduit 27 'near the front stops 9, and in the path of the sheet to be folded, is a member 281 which, as shown, consists of a short hollow roller rotated by a chain 33 driven from the driving shaft 34 of the conveying bands, the peripheral velocity of the roller being the same as the velocity of the sheet. The inside of the roller 28<1> is in communication'with the inside of the conduit 27, and also with the atmosphere when each of a series of holes 28 (not shown), in the roller periphery coincides with an aperture in a stationary member inside the roller. When the sheet to be cross-folded passes over the roller 28<1> it closes the holes in the latter whereby the suction produced by the pump 17 is slightly strengthened, whereupon the piston in the cylinder 24 is displaced to turn the valve 18 to cut off the conduit 16 from the atmosphere. When this occurs, the whole suction action of the pump 17 comes into operation and causes the downward displacement of the piston 13, which results in the downward stroke of the folding-blade 11. The sheet to be folded is pressed by the blade 11 between the rotating rollers 10. The conduit 27 is now open to the atmosphere, so that the piston in the cylinder 24 returns to open the conduit 16 to atmosphere, whereupon the piston 13 and blade 11 move upwardly. One or both of the rollers 10 may be suction rollers connected to the pump 17, and the blade 11 may have side rollers 40 on one or both sides thereof to press the sheet on to the rollers to facilitate the folding of the sheet. The short roller 28<1> may be mounted for adjustment transversely and longitudinally of the blade 11, and the stops 9 may be adjustable. In a modification, a stationary member may replace the roller 28<1>.
