446,484. Fusing and working silica. HERAEUS GES., W. C., Hanau-on-Main, Germany. Dec. 31, 1935, No. 36069. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1934. [Class 56] [See also Group XXVIII] Relates to a method of welding together two pieces of quartz, glass, or other refractory material, such as portions 1, 2 of a quartz tube with thick walls. According to the invention, the ends 3, 4 of the parts to be joined are bevelled, the two parts are assembled with the bevelled edges together as shown, the surfaces 3, 4 are heated over their entire extent by a blowpipe flame 5 or an electric arc, and further material of which the parts are composed is then fused into the space between the bevelled edges.
