Abstract

Light weight waterproof building-slabs containing from 85 to 95 per cent of sawdust, and made resistant to moisture by the use of rubber, are made by mixing sawdust, to which may be added a small amount of asbestos or other fibre such as peat straw or wood fibre, with an aqueous emulsion of asphalt containing at most 10 per cent of asphalt, forming a cake, pressing and drying at high temperature and pressure. The rubber for water proofing is either added to the asphalt emulsion or is applied as a separate layer on the outer surfaces of the slab. The slabs may be covered with layers of paper or pasteboard which may be covered on the inside with rubber so that they are vulcanized on during the pressing. Similar layers may also be provided in the interior of the slabs. Apparatus for forming, pressing and heating the slabs comprises a number of iron frames, each resting on an iron plate and having a top plate fitting into the frame. A flat spiral steam heating coil rests on the top plate. A number of frames with top and bottom plates and heating coils are assembled in a pile and pressed down. In an example, a composition comprises a mixture of 5 parts of asbestos and 95 of sawdust, and sufficient of an emulsion containing at most 10 per cent of asphalt to make a paste. The paper or pasteboard for covering the slabs is impregnated with asphalt and coated on one side with rubber by applying and drying a rubber emulsion containing 100 grams of 70 per cent latex, and 5 grams of sulphur per litre. A sheet of the treated paper is placed on the bottom plate of the mould, sufficient composition is inserted, a sieve loosely fitting on the frame is pressed down to remove superfluous emulsion, a top layer of paper is applied with the rubber side downwards, and then the top plate and heating coil. This is repeated until a pile of the required height is formed, when steam at about 130-140 DEG C. is applied to the heating coils and the pile is pressed. In a modification the binder comprises an emulsion containing per litre, 30 grams of 70 per cent latex, 100 grams of 70 per cent asphalt emulsion and 1,5 grams of sulphur.
