Abstract

b -Chlorethanesulphonic acid is prepared by reacting hydrogenchloride with isethionic acid, ethionic acid or carbylsulphate. The latter may be obtained by the absorption of ethylene in liquid sulphur trioxide. b -Chlorethanesulphonic acid may be used to prepare a condensation product of casein. Casein is suspended in an aqueous solution of caustic potash and the suspension refluxed after the addition of chlorethanesulphonic. The product is obtained by concentrating and adding alcohol.
