Abstract

Hard rubber powder is made by adding sulphur and a stabilizer such as casein to latex, spray-drying the latex to form a spongy mass, gently removing the mass from the drier by brushing with a soft brush, vulcanizing it while avoiding subjecting it to any mechanical pressure, and reducing the vulcanized rubber to powder. Fillers, zinc oxide and accelerators may be added to the latex which may be homogenized or agitated before spraying. The amount of sulphur may be 30 per cent calculated on the latex dry rubber content. Means may be provided for keeping the sulphur intimately mixed with the latex during drying.
