[Classes 6 (ii) and 58] In a cabinet for germinating seeds and growing seedlings in which boxes bare arranged one above another in troughs or open-topped receptacles a and nutrient liquid from a container d is supplied to them successively, each box or trough is connected with the next lower box or trough by a syphon which operates automatically when the liquid in the upper box or trough rises to a predetermined level. The bottoms of the boxes b are perforated or made permeable to water, and the container d and the compartments of the cabinet are closed by a lid f and doors g respectively. The container d communicates with the top trough by a pipe and a valve or cock, and each trough is provided with an overflow pipe n. A syphon k in each trough a periodically discharges the nutrient liquid into the next trough through a rubber pipe l. The short leg of the syphon extends through the bottom of the trough into a sump p. The lowest trough is fitted with a discharge valve. In a modification the syphons are arranged outside the cabinet. The syphons may be changed to vary the charging and discharging periods.
