443,397. Free - wheel mechanism for cycles. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP METAAL INDUSTRIE IMCO, Hengelo, Holland. Feb. 15, 1935, No. 4912. Convention date, April 28, 1934. [Class 136 (ii)] A bicycle &c. having front and/or rear wheel brakes actuated by back-pedalling, e.g. through cables and cams, is provided with a free-wheel device which is attached to the rear wheel and in which the driving-connection from the sprocket is effected by a number of balls or rollers mounted in a cage co-operating, through a deformable friction element, with the axle or other fixed part, whereby the driving- connection is held inoperative when the cycle is wheeled backwards. The clutch rollers or balls 3, adapted on forward driving to be gripped between inclined surfaces 2 and a ring 4 screwed on the wheel hub, are mounted in a cage formed of two parallel flat rings 5 secured together by pins 6, and to this cage is fixed, e.g. by means of a strip member 8, a friction spring 7, which is formed of a bent strip adapted to engage the axle cone or other fixed part in such a way that on forward rotation of the wheel it affords little or no frictional resistance, while on backward rotation it grips the cone &c. and holds the cage stationary, thus preventing the jamming of the rollers or balls.
