Abstract

443,382. Slicing-machines. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., Aden Road, Ponders End, Middlesex.-(Maatschappij van Berkel's Patent Naamlooze Vennootschap ; 33, Boezemsingel, Rotterdam, Holland) Oct. 13, 1934, No. 28657. [Class 28 (ii)] In a slicing -machine, the gauge plate or fence for controlling the slice thickness or for facilitating the initial positioning of the material, is made of glass or glazed (i.e. vitreous faced) material. The invention is described as applied to a push-pull, manual or spring feed, machine, the gauge plate 16, Fig. 4, being held at its lower edge by a strip 24 screwed to the support 22 which is mounted on a rod 27 slidable by suitable means, e.g. screw means, to adjust the plate 16 for slice thickness regulation. The rod 27 is attached at one end of the support 22 the other end recessed to rest on a stationary rod projecting from the machine base, this arrangement permitting the plate to be swung up for cleaning &c., away from the knife, the shaft 27 being rotatably mounted in its bearing to permit this. The plate may be provided with an edge re-inforcement, independent of the support 22, e.g. a removable U-section metal rim for the top and side edges. In a modification, the invention is applied to a machine having a mechanical screw feed and crank means for reciprocating the carriage. The plate 16 is supported at its bottom edge, as before, but the rod 27 is connected to the slice feed adjustment means so that the plate 16 is adjusted with the screw feed means. The interconnecting means are shown in Figs. 6, 7. The knob 40 is carried on a sliding rod 34 against which the feed pawl arm contacts during the carriage reciprocations. By lifting the knob 40, the rod 34 is slightly rotated and the detent 42 is raised from one of a series of notches 43 and the rod 34 may then be moved along and locked in another slice thickness position. The frame member 41 slides with the knob 40 and rod 34 and carries a roller 48 engaging a forked arm 46 on a shaft 47 aligned with the sliding rod 27, Fig. 7. The shaft 27 is pinned at 50 to the female screw member 44 in which is threaded the screwed extension 45 of the shaft 47. A spring 51 prevents backlash due to wear.
