[Class 100 (i)] Sheet separators.-For feeding sheets from a pile 2 to stencilling-machines a preliminary separating-device is provided in addition to the normal sheet-feeding devices, the preliminary separating-device acting to buckle a portion of the top sheet to permit the sheet below it to be held by a retaining or holding device while the top sheet is being fed. The pile 2, Fig. 1, is carried by a plate 1 and guided by a guide 3. A vertically sliding carriage 5 has pivoted to it a double-armed lever 8, which is oscillated from the stencilling-machine by a link 11, and a pair of corrugated rollers 9 are mounted in the lever 8 and act to buckle the top sheet when they are moved to the left by the link 11. Pawls 10 prevent rotation of the rollers 9 as they move to the left, and when the sheet is buckled a spring-pressed block 16 is allowed to descend on to the sheet below the top one and hold it until the feeding device has removed the top sheet. The block 16 is connected by a rod 15 to a lever 13 which is actuated by a pawl 18, connected to the link 11, to raise the block. A sloping abutment 20 acts on the pawl 18 and releases the block 16 when the top sheet has been buckled. On the return motion of the lever 8 the rollers 9 can rotate freely. By arranging the rollers 9 to act along one of the longitudinal side edges of the sheets the block 16 can be dispensed with, the feeding motion being parallel to the axes of the rollers 9. In a further modification, Fig. 10, for acting on the side edge, a friction roller 25 is pivoted on the carriage 5 and is rotated intermittently to buckle the sheet by means of a pawl-and-ratchet device operated by the link 11.
