[Class 37] [See also Group XL] Apparatus adapted for use in the stroboscopic investigation of high frequency phenomena comprises an envelope 5 in which are mounted a cathode 31, a Wehnelt cylinder 2, an anode 3, two pairs of deflecting plates 15 and a pair of screens each consisting of a layer 27, 28 of a group of crystalline or amorphous particles of a medium capable of rotating the plane of polarization of light under the action of an electric field mounted on a carrier 29, 30 serving as a coating. Light from a source 20 passes through crossed Nicol prisms (not shown) arranged one on each side of the screens. The electron beam from the source 31 acts solely on the screen 27 and the frequency to be investigated is applied to a grid (not shown) located between the cathode 31 and anode 3. The stroboscopic frequency is applied to the coatings 29, 30 and acts with a polarity opposite to that of the frequency to be investigated. In practice, the stroboscopic frequency is varied until no light is transmitted so that there is thereby obtained an indication or measure of the frequency of the vibration to be investigated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement having three electro-optically active layers with interposed carriers serving as coatings, the two outer active layers each being irradiated by an electron beam. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
