Abstract
Alkylcyclopentenones are prepared by treating alkylated butyrolactones with concentrated inorganic acids, preferably at elevated temperature. If desired, the corresponding unsaturated acids or esters are employed as starting material, being first converted by the acid treatment into the lactone. The products are useful as perfumes. Examples are given of the preparation of hexylcyclopentenone (dihydroisojasmone) by heating undecalactone, undecylenic acid or its ethyl ester with concentrated sulphuric acid, to which sulphur trioxide or phosphorus pentoxide may be added. The production of butylcyclopentenone from amylbutylrolactone is referred to.
