[Class 31 (i)] [See also Group V] In a machine for cutting into lengths strip material, e.g. extruded tyre tread material, by a rotary traversing cutter in which the cutter traversing and rotating means are geared together, the cutter is traversed by screw-andnut mechanism. In one form, Fig. 3, a motor 11 fixed to a cutter carriage 9 drives through gears 10, 10<a> the cutter shaft 7 which carries a skew gear 12 meshing with a skew gear 12<a> on a nut member 13 which co-operates with a fixed screw 14. The carriage 9 slides on a rod 16 and is preferably inclined so that the cutter 5 bevels the ends of the strip. The carriage 9 co-operates with switches to stop it at the end of each traverse and to control the direction of drive of the motor 11. In another form, Fig. 4, the motor 11 drives the nut member 13 through bevel gears 18, 18a and the latter gear 18<a> co-operates with a further gear 18<b> to rotate the cutter 5. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the motor drives the screw 14 and the carriage 9 forms the nut ; the gear 18<a> is slidably keyed to the screw and co-operates with the gear 18b as in Fig. 4. In another form, Fig. 6, the motor 11 drives a gear 25 which through a gear 25<a> rotates the cutter and through a gear 25b, skew gears 26, 26<a>, nut 13 and screw 14 traverses the cutter. In the forms shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 6, the motor may be separate from the carriage and connected to the driving shaft by a flexible or articulated shaft.
