Abstract

441,613. Clutches. PULSOMETER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and WARREN, R., Nine Elms Iron Works, Reading. April 14, 1934, No. 11335. [Class 80 (ii)] In a roller freewheel clutch, the inner member 3 has limited angular play on the driving (or driven) shaft 4 and the clutch is adapted to be locked by a plate 5 slidable on the shaft 4 and provided with teeth 6 adapted to be engaged with teeth 7 in the outer member 1, which latter is secured to the driven (or driving) shaft 2. Chamfered dogs 12, 15 on the member 3 and plate 5, respectively coact to prevent engagement of the teeth 6, 7 when the driven member of the freewheel clutch is overrunning the driving member thereof. To prevent jamming, the plate 5 is allowed a slight angular play on the shaft 4. The plate 5 is urged towards engagement with the member 1 by a spring and, when the clutch is applied as the tail clutch of a motor-vehicle gear-box, is retracted by over-depression of the main clutch pedal, with which it has a lost-motion connection, the plate being retracted after the main clutch has been disengaged and being released prior to engagement of the main clutch. The plate may have auxiliary manuallyoperated control means which may include means for preventing over-depression of the clutch pedal when desired. Specifications 394,144 and 418,328 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 435,278.
