Abstract
Azo dyes are prepared by coupling a nitramine of the formula <FORM:0441178/IV/1> wherein the p-position to the nitramine group is free, in a neutral or weakly alkaline solution with a diazo compound which is not at all or only very gradually changed by dilute alkalies. In an example the sodium salt of the nitramine from a -naphthylamine is coupled with diazotized o-anisidine in presence of sodium carbonate. The alkaline solution of the product may be further diazotized by means of acid and alkali nitrite and used as described in Specifications 430,167 and 430,222; for example cotton may be printed with a mixture of the sodium salt of the new azo-dye, alkali nitrite and 2.3-oxynaphthoic acid anilide, dried, passed through an acid bath and, if desired, treated with an acid-binding agent (black-violet tints); black tints are obtained by substituting the b -naphthylamide for the anilide.
