441,165. Coal-cutting machines. BRITISH JEFFREY-DIAMOND, Ltd., Stennard Works, Wakefield.-(Mitchell, L. E. ; 2666, Summit Street, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A.) July 30, 1934, No. 1758/35. Divided out of 427,881. [Class 68 (i)] [See also Groups XXIV, XXIX, and XXXIV] In a coal-cutting machine, motor-operated apparatus comprising planetary gearing is provided for propelling the machine, together with motor-operated mechanism for controlling the planetary gear to vary the speed of propulsion. In a machine as described in Specification 427,881, a reversible electric motor P drives the hydraulic pump 444 and also, through gears 331, 332, drives a shaft 373, Fig: 4, splined to the carrier 376 of differential planetary gears 384, 385, which mesh respectively with internal gears carried by a brake drum 387, and a cup member 371 fixed to a shaft 370. A further gear 412, loose on shaft 373, meshes with the gears 384, and is keyed to a brake drum 415. On applying band 391 to the brake drum 387, a slow drive is imparted to the shaft 370, while a fast drive thereto is effected by applying band 391<1> to the brake drum 415. The brake bands 391, 3911 are centrally supported by a bar 395 while the free ends of each band are secured to arms 398, Fig. 8, surrounding the cylinder 400 of a hydraulic motor, the plunger 401 of which is fixed to frame members 404 ; the arms 398 are pressed apart by springs 410 and fluid is admitted through port 408 in the plunger to set the corresponding brake band. The ports 408 of the two plungers 401 are connected respectively to ports 408<1>, 408<11> Fig. 10, of a valve casing 507 with supply connection S and exhaust connections E<1>. The ports 408<1>, 408<11> are controlled by slide valves 510, 512, each with a pin 517, 518, adapted to be engaged one at a time in a slot in a hand lever 508 fixed to an axially movable pin 514; a partition 519 prevents such axial movement except when the lever is in its extreme left hand position, so that the two brake bands cannot be set simultaneously. Restricted ports controlled by set-screws 521, 522 connect the supply S with the exhaust E<1> to limit the pressure of the brake bands. Further ports conduct leakage past packings 523 to the exhaust E<1>. The shaft 370, through gears 334, 335, drives a shaft 336, Figs. 3 and 7, which, through a ratchet clutch 353, sprocket 345 and chain 346 gives a slipping drive to the power cable drum 343, the latter, through chain 348, driving a double screw 349 to move the cable guide 350. An axially slidable rod 359 within the shaft 336 carries alternatively engageable clutch members 360, 438, clutch 360 acting through sprocket 364 and chain 365 to drive the truck supporting the machine and clutch 438 acting through gear 433 to drive a drum 425 for rope haulage of the machine. The truck may be replaced by a sled, endless tracks, &c.
