Abstract

441,017. Tempering glass sheets. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., Tower Building, Water Street, Liverpool, FORBES, L. J. B., The Crossways, View Road, Rainhill, St. Helens, Lancashire, and WILSON, J., Triplex Works, Eccleshall Road, King's Norton, Birmingham. July 10, 1934, No. 20244. [Class 56] [See also Group XXIX] A method of cooling a glass sheet, during the operation of tempering, consists in absorbing the greater part of the heat removed from the glass by the evaporation of water projected in a state of very fine division against the sheet. The water may be obtained in a state of fine division by the condensation of steam in a current of air. For this purpose, a casing 1, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a number of nozzles 2 projecting from, and uniformly distributed over, its front surface. Air is blown into the casing through a pipe 3, and steam is admitted to the casing through a pipe 5. The steam condenses and forms a cloud which is projected through the nozzles 2 against the glass sheet. A number of tubes 9 are fixed between the front and back surfaces of the casing to allow the escape of steam produced by contact between the water and the hot glass. In another construction, steam is blown through a number of nozzles of injector type, so that air is drawn through the nozzles and condenses the steam. The glass may also be cooled by a very fine spray of water produced by any suitable device. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, a vertical pipe 15 supplies air or steam to a tube 17 having a number of small holes 18 formed in its wall. The holes lead into an annular water channel 19, and a tubular member 24, which screws into the casing of the channel 19, controls the flow of water through the holes 18. A streamline member 22, fixed centrally within the tube 17, restricts the bore of the tube in the plane of the holes 18 to a narrow annular slot. The air or steam passes through this slot with a high velocity, and water passing through the holes 18 is formed into a very fine spray.
