Abstract

440,825. Cylindrical journal bearings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and SMALLWOOD, H. W., c /o General Electric Co., Ltd., Witton, Birmingham. Aug. 2, 1934, No. 22544. [Class 12 (i)] A laminated bearing of unit construction comprises a number of washers contained within a sleeve which is adapted to be removably mounted in the bearing housing, the sleeve being perforated to allow access of lubricant to the washers and ducts being formed in the washers to facilitate the passage of lubricant to the working surface of the bearing. Fibre washers 2, Fig. 1, are retained in a brass tube 3 by the inturned ends 4 ; the washers, except the end ones, have holes 5 which form longitudinal ducts 7 ; the central washers have slits 8, Fig. 3, extending from the holes 5 to the periphery, and communicating through openings in the tube 3 with lubricant contained in the reservoir 12 surrounding the tube 3 which is retained in position in the housing 10 by a screw 11. In a modification, Fig. 5, felt or fibre washers 15 are interposed between metal washers 14; the washers, except the end ones, are provided with holes which form ducts 7 ; the central washer has holes 16 extending to the periphery, and communicating through openings 9 in the tube 3 with the lubricant reservoir 12. The washers may be prevented from rotating relative to one another by a rod passed through a duct 7, or by peripheral nicks engaged by a longitudinal indentation in the tube.
