Abstract

440,521. Mounting cylinders of reciprocating engines. STEVENS, C. H., 296, High Holborn, London. Nov. 13, 1934, No. 32660. [Class 122 (i)] Comprises means for mounting and supporting the cylinders of a single-acting reciprocating-steam, oil, gas, &c. engine. The cylinder liner 9 seats in the end of the water jacket 10 which is supported by the top of the frame through the longitudinal cylinderhead bolt plate 3. The seats are forced together to make tight joints in securing the cylinder cover. The vertical plates 1 which form sling members extend from below the crank-shaft to beyond the cylinder-head, bolt plate 3, and carry the compression and ignition forces. The construction of the plates 1 and 3 resembles the sling-frame and cylinder-head plates described in Specifications 342,610, [Group XXVII], and 362,759. Plate 3 forms a circular seating for the water jacket and the cylinder-cover bolts 5, Fig. 4. The cylinder liner is supported at the bottom by a ring seating 8 in a diaphragm plate 7, and the jacket by means of an annular boss facing 12. Packing rings 14 are provided as shown, and water inlet and outlet connections 15, 17. A cover seating-ring 20 engages the liner 9. A steel plate 21 is welded to the top of the side plates 6. The frame may be cast, and the construction used for horizontal and inclined engines.
